Mean Green Takes Three Of Four From NMSU

LAS CRUCES, NM - The North Texas softball team swept a doubleheader against New Mexico State on Sunday afternoon at Presley Askew Field.
The Mean Green (19-53, 4-12) won by scores of 3-2 and 9-8, and finished with three wins in the four-game series against New Mexico State (10-44, 1-14).
Freshman pitcher Katy Maxey took both the wins in the doubleheader. She allowed two runs, spreading out 11 hits in seven innings of work in the first game. In the second game, Maxey came in relief of junior Mandy Hacker and allowed four runs off seven hits. At the plate, Maxey went 2-for-4 with an RBI. She went 3-for-5 in the nightcap.
New Mexico State came back to tie the nightcap of the doubleheader at 8-8 in the seventh inning after being down, 8-0. The Aggies scored four runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth and three runs in the seventh.
Junior Stephanie Cranmer posted the game-winning hit in the top of the eighth with a double. Junior Nicole Rodriguez scored the winning run after reaching base on an error. Cranmer went 2-for-4 in the game with two doubles and three RBI.
Maxey and Walker posted four of NT’s six hits and scored three of the five runs in the first two innings. Walker recorded three doubles in the two games and five extra-base hits in the four-game series.
After NT scored two more runs in the fourth inning when Cranmer scored two runs with a double, freshman Susan Waters hit her second home run of the weekend with a solo shot in the fifth inning to make the score, 8-0.
New Mexico State also staged a comeback in the first game, coming back from a 3-0 deficit. The Aggies scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, making it 3-2. The Mean Green was unable to score in the seventh inning despite loading the bases. In the bottom of the seventh, the Aggies placed the tying run on third when Veronica Owens tripled. Maxey forced two groundouts to seal the win.
Walker started things off in the first game, hitting a double to left center field in the top of the fourth inning. Cranmer followed that up with a single and reached second on the throw. Walker scored on a throwing error, and Cranmer reached home after an RBI by Waters. North Texas added a third run in the fifth inning after Maxey singled down the right field line, scoring junior Brittiny Chapman from third.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday, May 8 when it travels to Bowling Green, KY to play a four-game series with Western Kentucky. The first pitch is at noon.
