BOWLING GREEN, Ky - The North Texas softball team scored three runs in the sixth inning to defeat conference opponent Western Kentucky, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex.
The Mean Green (20-54, 5-12) lost the second half of the doubleheader, 1-0.
The Mean Green plated three unearned runs in the top of the sixth with two outs on the board to take a 3-1 victory against Western in the first game of the series. NT tallied seven hits off senior Allison Silver, including three-straight RBI singles after a WKU fielding error in the sixth to hand WKU its fourth-straight defeat.
Stephanie Cranmer and Heather Bostic led the NT offense with two hits each. Freshman Katy Maxey (15-32) held the Toppers to five hits, while striking out six and allowing just one unearned run.
The Toppers (34-20, 9-8) took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after Jessie Richardson drove in a run with a triple.
Having managed just one hit over the first five innings, the Mean Green bats came alive in the top of the sixth, tallying three runs after a two-out error by WKU. Cranmer got NT going with a two-out single, then Susan Waters reached on an error. Consecutive RBI singles by Monica Garcia, Bostic and Ana Vega gave NT a 3-0 lead.
North Texas threatened to add to its lead in the top of the seventh when Chapman chased Silver out of the game with a leadoff double. Adrienne Lathrop came on in relief and retired the next three NT batters in order to end the threat.
The Mean Green managed only three hits in the second game, including two by Cranmer. The Toppers held NT hitless until the fourth inning when Cranmer hit a two-out double.
Junior Mandy Hacker allowed eight hits and one earned run in five innings of work in the 1-0 loss. Hacker also posted the third Mean Green hit.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday, May 9 when it finishes its four-game series with Western Kentucky. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon.
