San Antonio (2/11/05) - Senior Stephanie Cranmer posted two hits, but Centenary scored three runs in the seventh inning and came away with a 3-0 victory against North Texas on Friday morning in first-day softball action at the UTSA Fastpitch Express Classic.
The Mean Green (0-2) lost its second straight game of the 2005 season, while Centenary (2-6) posted its second consecutive victory. North Texas senior pitcher Mandy Hacker (0-1) took the loss despite allowing only four hits and one earned run. Jessica Ivins took the win for Centenary, pitching seven shutout innings.
The first six innings were a pitchers’ duel between Hacker and Ivins. Hacker retired the first 10 batters before giving up a single in the third and a double in the fifth. The left-handed pitcher allowed only two hits in the seventh inning but was hurt by two infield errors, which allowed three runs to score. The Mean Green had an opportunity to come back in the bottom of the seventh, but Ivins retired the side in order.
Centenary held North Texas to three hits. Cranmer recorded the Mean Green’s first hit of the 2005 season with a double to center field in the first inning but was left stranded. She was one of five Mean Green players left on base in the game. The left fielder also had a single in the sixth inning. Sophomore Monica Garcia posted her first hit of the 2005 season with a single in the second inning.
North Texas returns to action Saturday, Feb. 12 when it faces Texas-San Antonio in second-day action at the UTSA Fastpitch Express Classic. The first pitch is set for 3:45 pm.
