DENTON (3/22/05) - The North Texas softball team heads to Austin on Wednesday to face nationally-ranked Texas in doubleheader action. The first game is set for 5 pm.
North Texas (7-16) had its four-game winning streak snapped with two losses last week to Stephen F. Austin and Oklahoma State. Both teams avenged earlier season losses to the Mean Green with wins. SFA used an early 5-0 lead to stay ahead of North Texas, while OK State used a pair of solo home runs to take a 2-0 win. The Oklahoma Baptist game was cancelled.
Despite two losses this week, the Mean Green continues to hit for extra bases. North Texas posted five extra-base hits against Stephen F. Austin, including two triples. The two triples hit in a single game marked the second time this season that North Texas has accomplished the feat. Both games were against SFA.
North Texas has already surpassed its number of triples hit last season. The Mean Green has posted seven triples this season, including two apiece by Heather Bostic and Katy Maxey. Kelei Walker posted three and Maxey had one last year all in separate games. In both games against Stephen F. Austin this season, North Texas posted two triples in each game, a first in the program. Freshman Kristina Fowler posted her first collegiate triple versus Tulsa.
Senior Stephanie Cranmer posted the team’s lone hit against Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls held a no-hitter until the sixth inning when Cranmer broke through with her 20th hit of the season. The leftfielder leads the team with 20 hits and is second on the team with a .308 batting average.
Freshman Kristina Fowler posted her first career home run against Stephen F. Austin last week. North Texas has gone long seven times this season, including two by team leader Susan Waters. Katya Muller joins Fowler on the list of freshmen who have hit homers.
Senior Mandy Hacker continues to swing a hot bat in March with two hits against Stephen F. Austin this past week. The senior is batting .350 this month and is 1-0 on the mound with an ERA of 1.83. Overall, Hacker leads the team with a .324 batting average. She has recorded four doubles this season, doubling her total from last season.
