Softball Begins Conference Play On Saturday

DENTON (4/8/05) The North Texas softball team opens Sun Belt Conference play this weekend when the Mean Green faces Florida International in two doubleheaders.

The Mean Green (7-20) is looking to snap a six-game losing streak with the last win coming on March 6 against Wisconsin. The Golden Panthers are 22-16 this season and went 4-0 last year against North Texas. FIU has won its last four games.

North Texas went 6-14 in conference play last season, winning five out of its last eight Sun Belt games. In the SBC Tournament, the Mean Green won its first game before bowing out to Louisiana-Lafayette and New Mexico State.

Senior Stephanie Cranmer and sophomore Katy Maxey earned all-conference honors for their play last year. Cranmer was fifth in the conference in hits with 66. She currently leads the team with 21 base hits this season.

With the loss to No. 8 Oklahoma last week, North Texas is 1-4 this year at Denia Park. After playing FIU, North Texas will not return home again until April 27. Last year, North Texas went 13-13 at home.

The first doubleheader begins on Saturday, April 9 at 1 pm. Denia Park is located off Fort Worth Drive in Denton.
