Mean Green Wins Second Game In SBC Tournament

Bowling Green, KY (5/13/05) The North Texas softball team came back to defeat Middle Tennessee, 5-3, to advance on in the Sun Belt Conference tournament on Friday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex.

The Mean Green (15-37) is now 2-1 in the 2005 conference tournament and will face New Mexico State for the second time at Bowling Green. North Texas defeated the Aggies, 2-0, in the first round of the tournament.

Pitcher Kristina Fowler (11-20) earned her second victory of the tournament after coming in to relieve starter Katy Maxey in the sixth inning. She allowed one unearned run on two hits in two innings of work.

After tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth, the Mean Green opened the game up with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. NT started the inning with three consecutive singles. Fowler then received a base on balls with the bases load, scoring Marquita Adams who pinch ran for Mandy Hacker. NT added two more runs off RBI by Monica Garcia and Katya Muller.

The Lady Raiders started a rally in the seventh inning but managed only one run. Trish White led Middle Tennessee with three hits and two RBI.

North Texas came back after being down by scores of 1-0 and 2-1. The Mean Green tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the third inning of an RBI single by Muller. Her hit to left field scored junior Kelei Walker, who doubled with two outs on the board. Muller finished the game with two hits and two runs batted in.

Walker scored her second run of the game to tie the score at 2-2. The centerfielder recorded her second double of the game to start off the bottom of the fifth inning. She scored after a Middle Tennessee error.

North Texas continues on in the consolation bracket, playing New Mexico State on Friday, May 13 at 6:30 pm.
