NT Softball Scores Six Runs In Loss

DENTON (5/7/05) - The North Texas softball team scored six runs, including a home run by Monica Garcia, but Western Kentucky came back to defeat the Mean Green, 9-6, on Saturday afternoon at Denia Park. North Texas lost the first game, 2-0.
The Mean Green (12-35, 5-13 Sun Belt) left 10 runners stranded in the two losses. Adrienne Lathrop (18-9) won both games on the mound for the Hilltoppers (30-21, 11-7 Sun Belt).
The second game see-sawed back and forth between the teams with North Texas taking two leads. The Mean Green scored two runs in both the first and second inning to take a 4-1 advantage. Senior Stephanie Cranmer and sophomore Katy Maxey both posted RBI singles, and Garcia recorded her first career home run.
Western Kentucky responded with two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to regain the lead, 5-4. A two-run long ball in the fifth inning gave the Hilltoppers the lead. Sophomore Susan Waters gave North Texas the lead again, 6-5, with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth. Cranmer and Maxey both singled to start off the inning.
WKU scored four runs on four hits in the sixth inning to seal the win. The Mean Green left six runners stranded in the game, including two in the seventh inning.
The Mean Green was limited to three hits in the first game. WKU scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take the first win. Freshman Kristina Fowler took the loss in the first game, allowing two earned runs on three hits.
Maxey posted three hits in the combined two games. She also took the loss in the second game, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday, May 8 when it faces Western Kentucky in a doubleheader. The first pitch is set for noon.
