North Texas Posts 15 Hits In Victory

DENTON (5/8/05) - Freshman Katya Muller recorded four hits in the North Texas softball team’s 11-4 victory against Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at Denia Park. The Mean Green lost the first game, 8-3.
The Mean Green concluded the 2005 regular season with a 13-36 overall record and a 6-14 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. Western Kentucky (31-22, 12-8 Sun Belt) won three out of the four games in the series. North Texas earned a No. 5 seed in the SBC tournament and will play fourth-seeded New Mexico State on Thursday, May 12 at 11 am.
North Texas posted a season-high 11 runs on 15 hits in the second game. The Mean Green scored runs in the first five innings, including five runs in the second inning. NT was aided by five WKU errors.
Muller posted six hits in the Sunday doubleheader. She went 4-for-5 in the victory with three runs scored and one RBI. She is the only player besides Stephanie Cranmer to post four hits in a single game at North Texas. Six North Texas players posted at least two hits in the victory. Sophomore Susan Waters went 2-for-4, including a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Freshman Kristina Fowler (9-19) earned the victory on the mound for North Texas. She pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out six Hilltoppers.
North Texas jumped out ahead, 2-0, in the first inning of the first game. Muller led off with a triple and was knocked in by Cranmer’s inside-the-park home run. It was Cranmer’s second of the season.
WKU came back to tie the game, 2-2, in similar fashion. Alana Towns hit an inside-the-park home run and knocked in Stephanie Young, who tripled to get on base. Towns went 4-for-4 in the game with seven RBI and two runs scored. She also posted two triples and a single in the game. Her triple in the third inning scored three runs, giving the Hilltoppers a 5-2 advantage.
Muller posted an RBI single in the fourth inning, knocking in NT’s last run of the game.
The 11-4 victory marked the last home game for North Texas seniors Stephanie Cranmer, Brittiny Chapman, Mandy Hacker and Nicole Rodriguez. Cranmer went 2-for-4 in the first game with two runs scored. Chapman and Hacker both posted two hits in the second game. Rodriguez started all four games at second base.
North Texas travels to Western Kentucky to compete in the 2005 Sun Belt Conference Softball Tournament, beginning on May 12.
