Tulsa, Okla. (2/25/06) The North Texas softball team scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat Creighton, 5-4, on Saturday night at Donna J. Hardesty Softball Complex. The Mean Green lost the first game of the day, 7-1, to Eastern Illinois.
North Texas (7-7) is off to its best start through 14 games in the history of the three-year program. The Mean Green lost to Eastern Illinois in the first meeting between the two teams, and Creighton still leads the series, 3-2.
In the first game, Eastern Illinois jumped out to a 3-0 lead after six innings. North Texas posted its only run of the game when senior Kelei Walker hit an RBI double, knocking in Kadie Platt. Platt reached base on a single to start off the sixth inning. EIU scored four runs in the seventh inning to seal the win.
North Texas put itself in a hole early again in the second game. Creighton started the game with a leadoff home run in the first inning. The Mean Green tied the game at 1-1 in the third after after Platt singled and then scored off an error.
Creighton regained the lead in the fifth inning, scoring on a Mean Green error. CU added to its lead with a two-run home run in the sixth.
Sophomore Katya Muller hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 4-4. It was her second home run of the tournament. She went 2-of-4 against CU, her third multi-hit game of the weekend.
Walker followed with a double. The centerfielder has posted at least one hit in each of the four games in the tournament. Junior Susan Waters knocked in the game-winning run with a double.
Freshman Jessica Smith retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to seal her second win of the season.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday when it finishes play in the Tulsa Festival with a 1 pm match-up against Tulsa.
