Tulsa, Okla. (2/25/06) The North Texas softball team hit two long balls but it was not enough to defeat Tulsa as the Mean Green lost, 7-2, in the final game of the Tulsa Festival on Sunday afternoon at Donna J. Hardesty Softball Complex. The Mean Green finished the tournament in third place with a 3-2 record.
North Texas went 3-2 in the tournament after capturing the title last year with a 4-1 record. Tulsa won this year’s tournament with a 4-1 record and 30 runs scored. Eastern Illinois came in second with a 3-2 record, while NT came in third with 20 runs scored. The Mean Green dropped to 7-8 overall and 1-1 in the series against Tulsa.
Junior Susan Waters and sophomore Kristina Fowler both hit solo home runs in the sixth inning, but it was not enough to overcome a 7-0 deficit. Waters posted six hits in the tournament, including three doubles and two home runs. Fowler also recorded two home runs along with two wins on the mound.
Fowler had the start on the mound but gave up seven runs in three-plus innings of work against Tulsa. Freshman Jessica Smith came in to relieve Fowler and held Tulsa scoreless the rest of the way. Smith posted a 2.19 ERA in four appearances during the tournament.
Sophomore Katya Muller led North Texas with seven hits in the tournament. She posted two home runs and knocked in six RBI. Freshman Sarah Jones posted the highest batting average (.455), going 5-for-11 in five games.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, March 1 when it faces Louisiana-Monroe at 3 pm in doubleheader action at Denia Park.
