DENTON (3/1/06) - The North Texas softball team hosts Louisiana-Monroe in doubleheader action on Wednesday afternoon at Denia Park. The first pitch is set for 3 pm.
The Mean Green went 3-2 at the Tulsa Festival and is now 7-8 overall. Despite not being able to defend its title at the Tulsa Festival, North Texas is off to its best start through 15 games in the three-year history of the program. North Texas started its first year with a 2-13 record and went 3-12 last year.
If the Mean Green wins both games against Louisiana-Monroe, North Texas will post a winning record (9-8). North Texas is 2-0 in the series against Louisiana-Monroe, including a 6-1 victory at the Tulsa Festival this past weekend. ULM (10-6) went 0-5 in the tournament after starting the season with a 10-0 record. Louisiana-Monroe is the only team that North Texas will face this week.
There is something about Tulsa, Okla. that agrees with the Mean Green. For the last two years, the Mean Green has played some of its best ball there. This past weekend, NT went 3-2 in the tournament with wins against Louisiana-Monroe, Boston College and Creighton. NT posted 34 hits in the five games, 16 of which were for extra bases. Against Louisiana-Monroe, NT posted four home runs in one game, the third time in three years it has accomplished that feat.
Waters was named to the all-tournament team at the Tulsa Festival for the second straight year. This past weekend, she hit .333, going 6-for-18 in five games, leading North Texas to a 3-2 record. Five of her six hits were for extra bases, including two home runs. In the comeback win against Creighton, Waters knocked in the game-winning run with a double in the top of the seventh inning. Waters gave North Texas an early 3-0 lead in the win against Lousiana-Monroe with a two-run long ball. She finished the tournament with fours runs batted in and an .833 slugging percentage.
