Waters Named Sun Belt Player Of Week

New Orleans, La. (3/14/06) Junior Susan Waters was named Sun Belt Player of the Week after her stellar offensive play at the OU/Worth Invitational. The North Texas softball team is off to its best start in the three-year history of the program with an 11-14 record.

The conference weekly honor is the second in a row for the Mean Green. Sophomore Kristina Fowler was named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week after recording a no-hitter against Louisiana-Monroe. Waters has received player of the week honors twice in her career.

Waters is coming off a hot hitting week, batting .389 in six games with an .889 slugging percentage. She led the team offensively at the OU/Worth Invitational, posting seven hits, including one double, one triple, two home runs and six RBI.

In the 8-5 extra-inning win against Utah Valley State, she knocked in the first of NT’s three runs in the eighth inning with a double to right center. Waters then scored the second run of the inning after an RBI single by junior Heather Bostic. Waters went 3-for-4 in the win. In the Mean Green’s 10-5 loss to No. 14 Oklahoma, Waters posted two home runs.

Overall, the junior is hitting .370 with nine home runs, 25 RBI, eight doubles and two triples. Through only 25 games this season, Waters is close to surpassing her 2005 stats: 32 hits, nine doubles, five home runs and 20 RBI.

North Texas returns to action on Monday, March 20 when it hosts New Mexico State at Denia Park at 4 pm.
