DENTON (3/22/06) Nicole Denes threw a three-hitter to lead the No. 15 Oklahoma softball team to a 7-0 victory against North Texas on Wednesday night at Denia Park.
The Mean Green (11-15) is now 0-8 in the series against Oklahoma and 0-5 against ranked opponents this season.
Denes won her sixth game of the season by allowing only three Mean Green hits in seven innings of work. She struck out five batters. Sophomore pitcher Kristina Fowler (9-6) took the loss for the Mean Green, allowing seven runs off 11 hits in seven innings.
Fowler got into trouble in the first inning, allowing two walks and three hits, leading to an early 3-0 OU lead. She settled down and followed up with two scoreless innings, including striking out the side in the third. Fowler finished the game with six strikeouts.
The Mean Green offense was unable to find its rhythm in the game. Senior Kelei Walker ran out a bunt in the first inning but was left stranded on third base. Fowler posted NT’s second hit of the night, a double in the fourth inning but the Mean Green was unable to hit her home.
The Sooners added three runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth to seal the win.
North Texas returns to action on Thursday, March 23 when it travels to Stillwater, OK to face Oklahoma State at 5 pm.
