Austin (3/8/06) - The North Texas softball team plays a ranked opponent for the first time this season when it faces No. 2 Texas tonight. The doubleheader begins at 5 pm.
The Mean Green (9-8) is 0-2 against the Longhorns with both losses coming last year in a doubleheader on the road. Kristina Fowler struck out seven Longhorns in the 2-0 nightcap loss last year.
North Texas posted its first no-hitter in the history of the program last Wednesday. Fowler allowed zero hits in the five-inning victory against ULM. She allowed only two walks, while striking out five in the victory. She ended up winning both games of the doubleheader and received Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week Accolades for her efforts.
Susan Waters’ hot bat continued this past week, hitting .600 in two games. She went 3-for-5 in two games against Louisiana-Monroe, including her first triple of the season. Her triple in the fifth inning against ULM knocked in three runs, ending the game on the run-rule. Waters leads the team with a .368 batting percentage, 21 hits, seven doubles, 16 RBI and five home runs. Through only 17 games this season, Waters is close to surpassing her 2005 stats: 32 hits, nine doubles, fi ve home runs and 20 RBI.
