Texas Tech Sweeps Doubleheader

DENTON (4/13/06) - The North Texas softball team outhit Texas Tech but left 10 runners stranded in a 3-1 loss on Thursday afternoon at Denia Park. The Mean Green lost the first game of the doubleheader, 8-2.
The Mean Green (16-24) has now lost five straight games, its longest losing streak of the season. Texas Tech extended its record to 18-24 overall. NT is 0-2 in the series against Texas Tech and 0-7 this season against Big XII schools.
In the second game, North Texas scored its one run in the sixth inning and had opportunities to score more but left two runners stranded. Down 2-1, sophomore Kristina Fowler started off the sixth with a double to center field. Sophomore Taylor Johnston knocked pinch runner Angie Palacios home from third with a two-out single. Sophomore Jonna Williams drew a walk and then advanced to second on a passed ball. With runners on second and third, freshman Kadie Platt grounded out to end the inning.
Texas Tech added an insurance run in the seventh to go ahead, 3-1. North Texas had another opportunity to score runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but left two more runners on base. Sophomore Katya Muller was tagged out at the plate after reaching base with a single. She moved to third off a Tech error but was tagged trying to reach home on a grounder.
Muller, Fowler and senior Kelei Walker all went 2-for-4 in the 3-1 loss. Fowler saw her nine-game hitting streak come to an end in the first game with an 0-for-2 outing. She took the loss on the mound in the first game after pitching four innings and allowing five runs off seven hits.
North Texas managed only four hits in the first game. The Mean Green scored its first run in the first inning off a Susan Waters’ hit and two Texas Tech errors. There were a combined six errors in the game. Junior Monica Garcia knocked in a run in the sixth inning, but it was not enough to overcome Tech’s 12 hits in the game.
North Texas returns to action on Friday, April 14 when it faces Middle Tennessee at 4 pm.
