Waters And Fowler Homer In Mean Green Victory

Nacagdoches, Texas (4/19/06) - Behind home runs by Susan Waters and Kristina Fowler, the North Texas softball team defeated Stephen F. Austin, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Hoya Field. Tara Hersey hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give SFA a 3-2 victory in the second half of the doubleheader.
The Mean Green (18-27) split the series with SFA (16-26) for the second year in a row.
North Texas outhit SFA, 10-5 in the first game but managed only two hits in the nightcap.
In the first game, Susan Waters tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning with her 14th home run of the season. She is the team’s single-season and career home run leader and is ranked in the top 20 nationally for long balls hit this season.
Following the home run and two Ladyjack errors, freshman Sarah Jones knocked in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly. Classmate Kadie Platt posted an RBI single to score NT’s third run of the inning.
Waters’ recorded her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Sophomore Katya Muller scored on the play after starting the inning off with a triple. Waters and Muller both posted two hits in the game.
North Texas used a five-run seventh inning to seal the win. Waters posted her third RBI with a single and Fowler followed with a three-run long ball. The home run was Fowler’s third of the season.
Fowler also earned the win on the mound, allowing only five hits over seven innings of work. She took the loss in the second game, pitching 5.2 scoreless innings before giving up the home run.
North Texas returns to action when it faces No. 13 Louisiana-Lafaytte at home this weekend at Denia Park.
