FIU Takes Two From Mean Green Softball

Miami, Fla. (4/8/06) The North Texas softball team lost both games of a doubleheader against FIU in its conference opener on Saturday afternoon at University Park. The Golden Panthers swept the doubleheader with scores of 4-1 and 3-0.
The Mean Green drops to 16-21 overall and 0-2 in conference play. NT is now 0-10 in the series against FIU. The Golden Panthers extend their record to 19-21 and 2-0 in the Sun Belt.
The Mean Green outhit FIU in the first game, 8-6, but left nine runners stranded on base. FIU also left nine runners stranded but was helped by six walks.
North Texas tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning of the first game after an RBI single by junior Monica Garcia. Junior Susan Waters scored NT’s lone run of the day after getting on base with a single. FIU took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning off one hit, three walks and a sacrifice fly.
Sophomore Kristina Fowler took the loss in the first after pitching six innings. She allowed three earned runs off six hits and walked six batters. She led the team with two hits in the game and extended her hitting streak to eight games.
Freshman Jessica Smith took the loss on the mound in the second game. She pitched six innings and allowed two earned runs off seven hits. Offensively, the Mean Green managed only two hits in the game by sophomore Katya Muller and Fowler.
North Texas faces FIU for a single game on Sunday, April 9 at noon in Miami.
