(5/6/06) Juniors Susan Waters and Heather Bostic both homered in the sixth inning, but the Western Kentucky softball team held on to its early lead to defeat North Texas, 7-6, on Saturday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex. WKU swept the doubleheader with a 4-0 victory in the nightcap.
Western Kentucky (28-26, 7-7 Sun Belt) secured a No. 3 seed in next week’s conference tournament with the doubleheader sweep. North Texas (20-35, 3-11) will be the No. 6 seed in the tournament and will face WKU in the first game.
In the first game, North Texas dug itself in a hole, giving up a combined seven runs in the first two innings. Alana Towns knocked in five of the seven runs, including a three-RBI triple in the second inning.
Junior Monica Garcia started the North Texas comeback in the fourth inning with a two-RBI double. Freshman Kadie Platt singled to start off the inning and moved to second after Water’s second walk of the game. After the base runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch, Garcia knocked them both home with her fifth double of the season.
Platt started the sixth inning with her second single of the game. Waters brought her home with her 18th home run of the season, cutting the WKU lead to 7-4. After Garcia posted her second hit of the game with a single, junior Heather Bostic recorded the second home run of the inning with her third long ball of the season.
Despite a single by Katya Muller and Water’s third walk of the game in the seventh inning, North Texas was unable to tie the game on Sunday.
Muller posted two of North Texas’ four hits in the second game but was left stranded on base. The Mean Green left five players on base in the game.
