Softball Falls In Consolation Game

Las Cruces, NM (2/10/07) - The North Texas softball team outhit Sam Houston State but left eight runners stranded in a 3-1 loss in the consolation game of the NMSU Las Cruces Hilton Invitational on Sunday morning.
The Mean Green (2-3) had beaten Sam Houston on Saturday, 5-1, for the first time in the series between the two teams. Sam Houston leads the series, 4-1. North Texas defeated Sam Houston and Colorado State in the three-day tournament in New Mexico.
The Mean Green outhit Sam Houston, 9-8, on Sunday morning. Susan Waters, a preseason All-Sun Belt selection, posted her third straight multi-hit game with three singles. She led the team in the five-game tournament with a .625 hitting percentage, 10 hits, three home runs and five runs batted in.
Similar to her freshman year, Waters’ first hit of the season was a home run. In her third at-bat, the senior hit a long ball against Colorado State. Waters gave North Texas its only lead against New Mexico State, 2-1, with her second home run in as many games in her first at-bat in the bottom of the first inning. Her third home run came in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game against Colorado State. The two-run shot cut the CSU lead to one, 8-7, but the Mean Green was unable to score any more runs.
Sophomore Sarah Jones posted her first multi-hit game of the season and knocked in the game’s only run in the fifth inning against Sam Houston. NT’s best opportunity to score runs came in the fourth inning after singles by Susan Waters, Jones and Kristina Fowler. The Mean Green left all three runners stranded on base.
Kayla Lawson (1-1) took her first loss in the circle for the Mean Green. She pitched four innings, giving up three runs off seven hits. She led the three pitchers in the tournament with a 2.55 earned run average in two starts. She picked up the first win of her career in the 5-1 victory against Sam Houston.
As a team, the Mean Green recorded a .274 hitting average in the tournament. Following Susan Waters, Platt led the offense with seven hits at the No. 2 hole. Fowler and Jones followed with five hits each. Fowler also tied Waters with a team-high five RBI. Freshman Rebecca Waters led the newcomers with four hits and three RBI at the designated player position.
North Texas returns to Denton for its home opener at Lovelace Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 pm against Oklahoma State.
