Las Cruces, NM (2/10/07) - Junior Kristina Fowler and senior Susan Waters were named to the NMSU Las Cruces Hilton Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the North Texas softball team to two wins this past weekend.
Fowler played first base and pitched in the tournament, but was named to the all-tournament team as an infielder. At the plate, the junior knocked in the winning run in the season-opening 6-3 win against Colorado State with a two-RBI double. She and Waters tied for a team-high five RBI. Fowler hit for a .400 average, posting six hits in 15 at bats.
Waters, a preseason All-Sun Belt selection, was also named to the all-tournament team as an infielder after starting five games at third base. She led the team with a .625 hitting percentage, 10 hits, three home runs and five runs batted in. Similar to her freshman year, Waters’ first hit of the season was a home run. In her third at-bat, the senior hit a long ball in the win against Colorado State. The two-time All-Sun Belt player gave North Texas its only lead in the loss against New Mexico State, 2-1, with her second home run in as many games in her first at-bat in the bottom of the first inning. Her third home run came in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game against Colorado State. The two-run shot cut the CSU lead to one, 8-7, but the Mean Green was unable to score any more runs.
North Texas (2-3) returns to Denton for its home opener at Lovelace Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 pm against Oklahoma State.
