Stillwater, OK (2/20/07) - The North Texas softball team travels to Stillwater, OK to play its first non-tournament game of the season against Oklahoma State on Tuesday afternoon at 3 pm.
The Mean Green (3-7) has had its last three meetings with OSU canceled because of inclement weather. North Texas had its home opener versus the Cowgirls scheduled for last Wednesday but cold weather put a stop to that game. The Mean Green had an away and home series against Oklahoma State canceled last season also because of heavy rain and then snow. NT is 2-2 in the series with the Cowgirls.
OSU is 5-5 on the season and coming off of a 2-3 weekend at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas. The Cowgirls had wins over Utah and No. 9 UCLA over the weekend.
On Wednesday, the Mean Green will try for a second time to have its home opener. The Mean Green will play Nicholls State in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 1 pm at Lovelace Stadium. Last week, NT’s first home opener was canceled ue to inclement weather. The Mean Green is 1-1 in the series against Nicholls, splitting a doubleheader last year. North Texas is 2-1 in home openers.
The Mean Green had a tough weekend at the Texas Classic, posting a 1-4 record. The team won its first game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi but then dropped two games to No. 10 Texas and one to San Diego State. The Mean Green lost to Texas A&M-CC, 8-4, in the third-place game on Sunday.
In her first game of the season, senior Monica Garcia went 4-for-5 with three RBI in the win against Texas A&M-CC. The four hits and three RBI were both personal bests. Only two other players (Stephanie Cranmer and Katya Muller) have posted a four-hit game at North Texas. Muller has posted four hits in each of her first two seasons at North Texas.
Junior Taylor Johnston posted three singles in the win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, tying a career high. The last time she posted three hits in a single game was last year against Corpus Christi. She went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple and knocked in two runs. Johnston and Garcia combined for seven of NT’s nine hits in the win.
Christen Jonse hit her fourth career home run in the win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, a pinch hit long ball in the seventh inning. Jonse pinch hit for Sierra Scott and knocked in three runs with the home run. Jonse also posted an RBI double in the loss against the Islanders. Jonse led the team over the weekend with four RBI.
Sophomore Ashley Lail picked up the team’s lone win at the Texas Classic this weekend. In the first game against the Islanders, Lail pitched a complete game, allowing one run off four hits. She went 1-2 in four appearances and finished with an ERA of 2.86. She leads the three pitchers with an ERA of 3.41.
