DENTON (2/8/07) - The North Texas softball team opens its season on Friday, Feb. 9 at 1:30 pm against Colorado State at the Las Cruces Hilton Invitational.
MeanGreenSports.com is rounding up its preview of the 2007 season with the pitchers. The Mean Green opens its home portion of the schedule on Wednesday, Feb. 14 against Oklahoma State at 5:30 pm. The team will be playing on its new field, Lovelace Stadium, which is located in the Mean Green Village on Bonnie Brae in Denton.
Junior Kristina Fowler returns to the pitching circle after solid freshman and sophomore campaigns. She has pitched more than 400 innings in the last two years and will be happy to see newcomers joining the pitching staff.
"All three of our pitchers are capable of being starters and shutting down teams," said head coach Kelly Burns. "They all have their own style."
Fowler has added three pitches to her repertoire after being named to the Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team last May. She won a school-record 19 games and pitched NT's first no-hitter against Louisiana Monroe. The junior will also see time at first base.
Ashley Lail joins the Mean Green after a solid freshman campaign at Centenary College. She brings experience, composure and a good assortment of pitches to the circle. Lail wasa named All-Mid Continent Second Team last spring at Centenary after finishing in the top five in conference in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched.
Freshman Kayla Lawson brings tenacity and a great presence to the mound. She was a four-time first-team all-conference player at Santa Fe High School in Edmond, OK.
