Jaguars Take Two From Mean Green Softball

Mobile, AL (3/17/07) - The North Texas softball team could not hold an early lead as South Alabama scored late runs to defeat the Mean Green, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field. The Mean Green was held to one hit in the opening 1-0 loss.
The Mean Green (7-20, 3-2) lost its first two Sun Belt Conference games after starting league play with a 3-0 record. NT is 0-2 in the series with the Jaguars, who improve to 15-9 and 2-0 in the Sun Belt.
Sophomore Kadie Platt broke up Linden Jones’s no-hitter in the top of the seventh inning of the first game with a single to left field. After advancing Platt to second with a sacrifice bunt, the Mean Green had two opportunities to push her home but Jones forced out the next two batters.
The Mean Green also had opportunities in the seventh inning of the nightcap. Down 4-2, Katya Muller singled home Rebecca Waters with two outs to cut the lead to one run. Waters started the inning with a double. Amanda Leggett struck out the next Mean Green batter to earn the win. Leggett earned the win for the Jaguars after allowing three runs off six hits.
Sophomore Ashley Lail (4-6) took the loss for the Mean Green in the first game despite allowing only five hits. The Jaguars scored its lone run in the fourth inning off an RBI single by Carolina Mendoza. Katie McGuire scored the unearned run after reaching base off a Mean Green error.
The Mean Green took an early 2-0 lead in the second game. Muller started the game with a lead-off single and scored off a double by Susan Waters. Monica Garcia knocked in Waters with an RBI single to put NT ahead, 2-0.
USA scored one run in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly and then tied the game with two doubles in the fourth inning. Kristen Hayes and Evelyne Pare posted RBI singles in the sixth inning to give the Jaguars a 4-2 advantage.
The Mean Green was outhit in the first game, 5-1 but came back to tie USA with six hits in the second game of the doubleheader.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday, March 18, when it finishes play against the Jaguars at 10:30 am with a single game.
