Jonse Hits Three Home Runs In Doubleheader Sweep

DENTON (3/21/07) - Senior Christen Jonse hit three home runs in a two-game sweep to lead the North Texas softball team to 5-2 and 9-1 victories against Central Arkansas at Lovelace Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mean Green (10-20 ) takes a 2-0 advantage in the series against the Bears. NT has won its last three games, while Central Arkansas drops to 8-21 overall.
Jonse pinch hit her first home run of the day in the sixth inning of the first game, a two-run shot to right center. Senior Susan Waters started off the inning with a solo home run to left center field. The Mean Green’s three runs in the sixth inning propelled the team to a 5-2 victory.
Senior Monica Garcia put the Mean Green on the scoreboard in the third inning of the first game with a two-RBI double to center field. Kadie Platt and Katya Muller both scored after reaching base with a single and a double.
The Mean Green posted three home runs in the 9-1 victory, including two by Jonse. Susan Waters hit a three-run long ball to give NT an early 3-0 lead in the third inning. Jonse followed with a solo shot in the fourth inning and then hit her third home run of the day in the sixth.
North Texas scored five runs in the sixth inning, ending the game on the eight-run rule.
Waters leads the team with seven home runs, while Jonse follows with four, including two pinch-hit homers. Both seniors went 3-for-3 with three RBI in the nightcap.
Kristina Fowler (3-9) and Ashley Lail (6-7) picked up wins in the circle for the Mean Green. Fowler struck out a season and team-high 10 batters in the 5-2 victory. She allowed only two runs off three hits in seven innings of work. The junior carrried a no-hitter through five innings. The Bears posted a run in each of the last two innings. Lail struck out eight Bears batters in the nightcap, allowing one run off five hits in six innings of work.
The Mean Green has been perfect in the field, allowing no errors in the last three games.
North Texas returns to conference action this weekend when it faces Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton. The Mean Green starts off play on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 5 pm.
