DENTON (3/27/07) - Senior Susan Waters hit two home runs to lead the North Texas softball team to an 8-3 victory against UMKC on Tuesday night at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green (12-22) tied the series with the Kangaroos (2-24) at 1-1. North Texas is now 7-3 at home in Lovelace Stadium.
North Texas scored five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-1 lead and were supported by pitchers Kayla Lawson and Kristina Fowler. Five of NT’s nine hits were for extra bases.
"We hit early, scoring five runs in the first two innings," said North Texas head coach Kelly Burns. "We need to do more of that. We also hit in the clutch, hitting with two outs and runners on base."
Junior Katya Muller started the Mean Green offense right from the start, posting a double in NT’s first at bat. After senior Monica Garcia advanced Muller to third with a sacrifice bunt, Waters hit her first of two home runs to give the Mean Green a 2-1 lead.
Muller added to the lead in the second inning with the team’s first triple of the season, which knocked in two runs. Garcia brought Muller home with a single to right field.
UMKC cut the lead to two, 5-3, with a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Senior Danielle Rupp knocked in her second run of the season with a single in the bottom of the fifth, tacking on a sixth run for the Mean Green.
Waters hit her team-leading 11th home run in the sixth inning to add two more runs to the score, 8-3. The preseason all-conference player has hit two home runs in a single game twice this season. Last weekend, she posted two home runs in a 5-0 victory against Florida Atlantic. The senior holds the single-season (18) and career (43) home run records at North Texas.
Waters, Muller and Sarah Jones led the Mean Green offense with two hits each.
Lawson (2-4) won her second game in the circle for the Mean Green. She pitched five innings, giving up three runs off six hits. Fowler earned her first save of the season and third in her career, pitching two perfect innings.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, March 28 when it faces Texas Tech on the road at 5 pm.
