Softball Loses To Iowa State In Extra Innings

Tulsa, OK (3/4/07) - The North Texas softball team lost 4-2 in extra innings to Iowa State in the third-place game at the Great Western Downtown Plaza Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Mean Green went 0-5 in the Tulsa Tournament.
The Mean Green (3-16) has lost 13 straight and is 0-2 in the series against Iowa State (5-15). North Texas is 0-1 this season in extra innings.
Jessica Quade broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run homer for Iowa State in the top of the ninth inning. Amie Ford sent the Mean Green down in order in the bottom of the inning to pick up the win for Iowa State. She pitched five scoreless innings, holding NT hitless.
Junior Kristina Fowler (0-7) took the loss in the circle for the Mean Green after a pitching a seson-high nine innings. After giving up two unearned runs in the top of the first inning, she pitched seven scoreless innings. She allowed one earned run off five hits.
Iowa State took an early lead in the first, scoring two unearned runs. The Cyclones got its first batter on base due to a Mean Green error. The runner scored off an RBI double, and Iowa State added a second run with a sacrifice fly.
Senior Monica Garcia knocked in the team’s first run in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single. Susan Waters, who reached base off an error, scored on the play after Garcia tried to reach second, tying the game.
The Mean Green left nine runners stranded on base in the game. NT had the bases loaded in the fifth and eighth innings but were unable to reach home plate.
Sophomore Sarah Jones led the team offensively this weekend with six hits and a .462 batting average. Susan Waters and Katya Muller followed with four hits apiece.
North Texas returns to action on Tuesday, March 6 when the Mean Green plays Arkansas on the road at 3 pm.
