DENTON (4/14/07) - The North Texas softball team used a five-run third inning to defeat the Troy Trojans, 10-4, on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green lost the first game of the doubleheader, 9-2.
The Mean Green (17-28, 9-8) took one game from conference leader Troy (34-12, 12-5). NT is now 3-3 in the series with the Trojans.
The Mean Green scored 10 runs off 10 hits and three Trojan errors in the 10-4 victory. NT took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and then used the five-run third inning to take control of the game.
"We hit the ball throughout the lineup," said North Texas head coach Kelly Burns. "That was key. We had 10 hits and none of them were home runs. We are capable of doing that more often. With the wind, today was not a home run game."
Freshman Kayla Lawson (4-12) won her first Sun Belt Conference game. She pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four runs and five hits, while striking out a season-high six batters.
"I had a lot of spin and movement on the ball," said Lawson about her success in the circle. "I haven’t had a lot of movement in the past. This was a big win for us. We are only going to go up. Hopefully, we can come out of the series with two wins."
Christen Jonse and Katya Muller backed up Lawson in NT’s big third inning. Both players posted two-RBI doubles in the inning. Taylor Johnston, who had an RBI single in the inning, posted three hits in the game.
Monica Garcia scored the first run of the second game by stealing home. Kristina Fowler knocked Susan Waters’ home from third with an RBI single, giving North Texas an early 2-0 lead.
Troy had a five-run inning of its own in the first game. The Trojans used a five-run fifth inning to win the first game of the series. The Mean Green was held to four hits and was hurt by four errors in the game.
Sophomore Ashley Lail (10-11) took the loss in the circle. She pitched four and two-thirds innings, giving up six earned runs and six hits.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday, April 15 when it finishes the three-game series with a single game against Troy at 1 pm.
