Softball Defeats Western Kentucky In Ten Innings

Bowling Green, KY (4/22/07) - Juniors Taylor Johnston and Katya Muller each knocked in a run in the top of the tenth inning to give the North Texas softball team a 9-7 victory against Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon at the WKU Softball Complex.
The Mean Green (18-31, 10-11 Sun Belt) is 9-8 in the series with the Hilltoppers (25-24, 8-7 Sun Belt) and takes one of three in the weekend series. North Texas is now 2-1 in extra-inning games.
Behind two Susan Waters’ home runs, the Mean Green jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning. WKU tied the game at 7-7, following a five-run sixth inning. The Hilltoppers scored those five runs off four hits and two Mean Green errors.
North Texas was unable to score another run till the top of the tenth inning when Johnston knocked home Sarah Jones with an RBI double, giving the Mean Green an 8-7 lead. Jones was placed at second at the start of the inning. Johnston scored the ninth run when Muller posted a single. Muller posted three hits in the game, while Johnston posted two.
Susan Waters led the team with four RBI after posting two two-run long balls. She leads the team with 15 home runs and 36 RBI.
Junior Kristina Fowler won the game in the circle, giving up two unearned runs and seven hits. She pitched eight and 2/3 innings, though not consecutively. Fowler pitched the first four innings before Ashley Lail came in to get the final out in the fourth inning. When Lail got in trouble in the big sixth inning, Fowler returned to close out the game.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, April 25 when it faces UT-Arlington on the road at 6 pm.
