DENTON (4/29/07) - Junior Katya Muller hit two home runs for North Texas, but the No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette softball team scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-2 victory against the Mean Green on Sunday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium.
The Ragin’ Cajuns (41-34, 13-7 Sun Belt) swept the three-game series against the Mean Green this weekend and remain unbeaten against NT (19-34, 10-14 Sun Belt) with an 0-16 series record.
North Texas held a 1-0 lead after Muller led off the game with a solo home run to left field. The Ragin’ Cajuns took the lead with a four-run third inning. Muller hit her second home run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to two, 4-2.
The Mean Green left seven runners stranded in the game. NT had its best opportunity to score runs in the fifth inning when ULL walked two batters. North Texas loaded the bases but was unable to bring any batters home.
Brittany Cuevas pitched a two-hitter for ULL, allowing just the Muller home runs in the game. Ashley Lail took the loss for the Mean Green, falling to 10-15 overall. She pitched six innings and allowed four runs and eight hits. She struck out six Ragin’ Cajuns.
Muller leads the team with 59 hits. She is 10 hits shy of tying her single-season school record of 69 which she set last year. She has now posted six home runs this season, which is good for second on the team. Susan Waters leads the team with 16.
The Mean Green honored its six seniors in a pre-game ceremony. Heather Bostic, Monica Garcia, Maureen Kelley, Christen Jonse, Danielle Rupp and Susan Waters are the first North Texas players to play all four years in the four-year old program.
North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, May 2 when it faces Stephen F. Austin at 3 pm at Lovelace Stadium.
