DENTON, TEXAS (5/16/07) - University of North Texas head softball coach Kelly Burns has resigned to pursue other interests, Director of Athletics Rick Villarreal announced today.
"My husband, Kevin, was offered a teaching position back home in New Boston (Texas) and we both felt it was too good of an opportunity to turn down," said Burns. "I just recently accepted the high school principal’s position at Avery Independent School District. I appreciated the opportunity at North Texas and enjoyed my time here."
Burns’ resignation is effective June 15. Assistant coach TJ Hubbard will assume duties as interim head coach beginning immediately.
"We are grateful for the service that Kelly has given to North Texas and the Mean Green softball program," said Villarreal. "She has led this program to a level that will attract the quality of applicants necessary to advance Mean Green softball to national prominence. The search for her successor will begin immediately."
Burns was named the second head coach in the new era of Mean Green softball on May 25, 2004 after spending the previous three years at Texarkana College. In her three years at the helm of North Texas, Burns compiled a 59-112 overall record and a 19-40 mark in the Sun Belt Conference. The 2007 team went 22-36 and 10-14 in conference play. The Mean Green defeated No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
