Murfreesboro, TN (5/8/07) Senior third baseman Susan Waters and junior shortstop Katya Muller were named to the All-Sun Belt Conference First Team, released Tuesday by the league office. Waters is receiving the award for the second straight year, while Muller is a first-time honoree.
For the second straight year, Waters was named to the first team after leading North Texas in home runs (17), runs scored (44) and RBI (39). The third baseman is among the conference leaders in runs scored (third), home runs (second) and total bases (second). She is ninth in the conference in batting average (.344).
The Davenport, Okla., native currently holds 12 single-season and 13 career records at North Texas. Waters set the single-season record for runs scored in 2007 with 44, breaking her own record of 36. She already holds the single-season and career records for home runs. She has hit 17 home runs this season, which is one shy of tying her single-season record. The senior is tied for 20th in the NCAA in home runs per game (.31).
Waters received numerous accolades during the year after being named a preseason All-Sun Belt selection. For the third year in a row, she was named to the Tulsa Festival All-Tournament Team. She was named Sun Belt Player of the Week for the Week of April 2 after posting four home runs and nine RBI in five games.
Muller is making her first appearance on the All-Sun Belt Team after a stellar junior season for the Mean Green. She leads the team with a .346 batting average, 62 hits and 13 doubles. The shorstop is seven hits shy of tying her single-season hit record, which she set last year with 69 hits. She is also one double short of tying Susan Waters’ single-season for doubles.
Similar to last year, Muller is finishing the season strong. She is riding a nine-game hitting streak and has hit four home runs in the last four games. Her 2007 numbers have crept towards last year’s performance as she has led the team during conference play. In conference games only, she is tied for second in the conferenece with 29 hits and ranks third with 54 total bases.
The Mean Green will play in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Murfreesboro, TN, beginning on Wednesday, May 9 with a match-up against the No. 2 seed, Louisiana-Lafayette, at 12:30 pm. North Texas earned a No. 7 seed in the tournament after finishing with an overall record of 21-34 and 10-14 in conference play.
