DENTON, TEXAS (8/23/07) - University of North Texas softball coach TJ Hubbard announced today the hiring of former Oklahoma All-American Erin Evans as the Mean Green’s new assistant coach.
"Erin is a great addition to our staff," said Hubbard. "Her playing experience at the collegiate and professional level will add a new dimension to the team. I think our student-athletes will be able to relate to her as a recent collegiate player. She is a very energetic person, and I think her enthusiasm is one of her best qualities."
Evans recently served as a volunteer assistant with the Cameron University softball team. She also worked with the Saddleback College softball program in Mission Viejo, Calif., as a volunteer assistant. At North Texas, Evans will oversee the outfielders and assist with hitting instruction.
A four-year starter for Oklahoma in the outfield from 2000-03, Evans was a part of four World Series appearances with the Sooners, including the national championship team in 2000. She was a three-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, a three-time All-Midwest Region selection and was the first freshman player in OU history to earn All-America honors as a third-team selection in 2000. She was named to the NCAA All-Region Team in 2000 and 2001 and was named the NCAA Regional Most Outstanding Player in 2001.
In the OU career records book, Evans is ranked sixth in games played (254), seventh in at-bats (728) and runs scored (135), seventh in hits (236) and sixth in triples (11).
Evans also excelled in the classroom. The Lawton Okla., native was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and a four-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection.
Since graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education from Oklahoma, Evans has been competing with the Rockford Thunder of the National Pro Fastpitch League in Rockford, Ill., for the last three years.
