DENTON (8/23/07) - The University of North Texas has announced its 2008 softball schedule which features a home tournament to start off the spring season and home contests against Big XII opponents Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.
Under first-year head coach TJ Hubbard, the Mean Green has 14 home dates and one tournament at Lovelace Stadium during the spring season. North Texas will play two home tournaments during the fall season, including the University Classic on October 5-6, 2007. North Texas will also hold its first-ever Alumni Game on September 21.
North Texas opens the spring season with a home tournament, the Quality Inn Invite, on February 9 and 10th. The Mean Green will begin its second season in its home park, Lovelace Stadium, located in the Mean Green Village. NT will host its season opener for the first time in the five-year history of the program.
"We are excited about starting the season with our first true home tournament," said Hubbard. "For the first time, we can get our team ready for the season and stay on campus for that opening weekend rather than getting on the road."
The Mean Green will participate in three other tournaments to start off the season: at Sam Houston State in Huntsville, at Texas A&M in College Station and at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. NT will have home and away contests in February with Big XII opponent Oklahoma State.
Remaining non-conference foes for the Mean Green include Louisiana Tech, Stephen F. Austin, Texas Woman’s, Texas Tech, UTSA, UTA and Centenary. North Texas has home and away dates with local teams, Texas Woman’s and UTA. The softball team hosts Texas Tech on March 18 after defeating the Red Raiders last year on the road for the first time in school history.
The Mean Green begins conference play with an away series against ULM on March 8 and 9. North Texas opens Sun Belt play at home with South Alabama on March 15 and 16. Other Sun Belt foes making their way to Denton include FAU, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. North Texas closes out the regular season by playing UTA on April 30.
Troy will host the Sun Belt Conference Tournament from May 7-10 in Troy, AL. The top eight teams in the nine-team conference will make the tournament in 2008.
The Mean Green finished the 2007 season with a 22-36 overall record and a 10-14 conference mark. NT returns six starters and 13 letterwinners for the upcoming season.
