DENTON (2/20/08) Mariza Martinez and Lauren Bergstrom each posted three hits to lead the North Texas softball team to a 5-2 victory against Oklahoma State on Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green improves to 4-5 overall and ties the series with the Cowgirls, 3-3. The last time North Texas beat OSU was a 4-3 victory on March 4, 2005. The Cowgirls fall to 7-4.
North Texas was aggressive right from the start. Leadoff hitter Martinez singled to start off the game. After a great bunt that Bergstrom ran out for a single, freshman Mallory Cantler hit her team-leading third double of the season, scoring Martinez. Senior Katya Muller knocked home Bergstrom with a grounder to third base to give North Texas an early 2-0 lead.
OSU tied the game briefly in the fourth inning with two unearned runs. North Texas quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with RBI singles by Martinez and Bergstrom. Martinez added to the lead with her second career home run in the sixth inning.
Jennifer Smith picked up her second career win with a three-hit, seven-inning performance. She tied her career high with five strikeouts. Bergstrom and Martinez were the first North Texas players this season to post three hits in a game. Both had career-high days.
North Texas competes in the Texas A&M Invitational this weekend beginning on Friday, Feb. 22. The Mean Green faces Sam Houston and Temple on Friday.
