DENTON (2/9/08) - The North Texas softball team picked up its first win of the season with a 3-0 victory against Creighton on Saturday at the Quality Inn & Suites/Point Bank Invitational at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green defeated Tulsa in the second game, 7-5, capitalizing on 10 hits.
North Texas is now 2-0 this season and 3-2 in season openers. NT takes a 3-2 advantage in the series against Creighton and ties the series, 2-2, with Tulsa. Head coach TJ Hubbard picked up his first win at the helm of the Mean Green, and NT starts 2-0 for the first time in the history of the program.
“I think we played as a complete package from start to finish for the first time in a while,” said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard.
Kristina Fowler contributed in the circle as well as at the plate. The senior picked up her first win of the season with a one-hitter against Creighton. She struck out four batters in seven innings of work. In the game against Tulsa, Fowler broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
North Texas recorded only two hits in the win against Creighton, but it was all the Mean Green needed. On the first pitch she saw, senior Katya Muller hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. It was the Mean Green’s first hit of the season. Freshman Mallory Cantler added the third NT run with an RBI double in the sixth inning. Cantler knocked in two runs in the second game with her second double of the day, tying the contest at 2-2.
Freshman Mariza Martinez was one of two Mean Green players to post a multi-hit game. She posted two hits, including an RBI double in the fourth inning against Tulsa. Junior Sarah Jones went 2-for-4 against Tulsa.
Sophomore Kayla Lawson picked up her first win of the season after relieving Jennifer Smith in the fourth inning against Tulsa. She allowed just one run off two hits in four innings of work.
Creighton went 1-1 in the opening day of the tournament with a 4-0 win against Texas State. Bailey Dawson hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Blue Jays the win.
Lauren Lindsay went 3-for-4, including two home runs to lead Tulsa to a 6-2 win against Texas State.
The Quality Inn & Suites/Point Bank Invitational continues with four games on Sunday, Feb. 10 at Lovelace Stadium. North Texas plays Tulsa at 3 pm and Texas State at 5:30 pm.
