Mean Green Softball Comes Up Short Against TWU

DENTON, Texas (3/12/08) Freshman Mallory Cantler hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Mean Green came up just short as TWU defeated the North Texas softball team, 5-4, on Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green falls to 9-15, while TWU improves to 8-22. Texas Woman’s snaps a five-game losing skid and takes a 1-0 advantage in the series with the Mean Green.
Down 5-1 in the seventh, the Mean Green rallied with three runs. Katya Muller and Mariza Martinez hit back-to-back singles and Cantler brought them home with her second home run of the season. Two pop flies by the Mean Green ended the rally.
The Mean Green was hurt by three errors in the game. TWU was able to score four runs off those errors. The winning run for the visitors reached base on an error.
Kristina Fowler took the loss for the Mean Green despite allowing just one earned run off seven hits. She struck out five batters.
Cantler posted her second three-hit game. She went 3-for-4 with three RBI. The top three in the lineup posted six of NT’s nine hits. The Mean Green outhit TWU, 9-7.
Freshman Mariza Martinez knocked in the team’s first run with her fourth home run off the season. She ties the team lead with four homers and tied the game at 1-1.
North Texas returns to action on Saturday, March 15 when it faces South Alabama in a doubleheader beginning at 2 pm at Lovelace Stadium.
