Monroe, LA (3/8/08) Home runs by Kristina Fowler and Courtney Bradshaw led the North Texas softball team to an 11-1 victory against Louisiana at Monroe at the ULM Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Mean Green lost the first game of the doubleheader, 4-1.
The Mean Green extends its overall record to 8-14 and begins the Sun Belt Conference season with a 1-1 record. NT leads the series against ULM, 9-2.
Fowler hit her team-leading fourth home run of the season in the first inning of the second game to give North Texas an early 3-0 lead. Bradshaw hit a two-run long ball in the third, the first of her career, to extend the Mean Green’s lead to 6-1.
Sophomore Kayla Lawson picked up her team-leading fourth win in the circle for the Mean Green. She pitched seven innings and allowed just one run off three hits. Freshman Jennifer Smith (3-4) picked up the loss in the first game.
The Mean Green left nine baserunners stranded in the opening 4-1 loss. North Texas held a 1-0 lead but ULM used a three-run fourth inning to take control of the game. The Warhawks recorded five doubles in the win.
North Texas had no problems knocking home runners in the second game. Ahead 6-1 in the fourth inning after the two home runs, North Texas loaded the bases for Heather Bostic who knocked in a run with a single. Bradshaw followed with an RBI single of her own to add to the Mean Green’s lead, 8-1. North Texas recorded a season-high 13 hits in the game.
The Mean Green added three unearned runs in the seventh inning to give North Texas a season-high 11 runs. ULM was hurt by two errors in the seventh inning and four in the game.
Freshman Mariza Martinez posted two hits in each of the two games. She also recorded RBI singles in both games. Mallory Cantler, Katya Muller, Fowler, Bradshaw and Bostic posted two hits in the second game.
North Texas concludes the three-game series with the Warhawks with a game on Sunday, March 9 at 1 pm.
