Fowler Posts Three Hits In Mean Green Victory

MONROE, La. (3/9/08) Senior Kristina Fowler posted three hits to lead the North Texas softball team to a 4-2 win against Louisiana at Monroe on Sunday afternoon at the ULM Softball Complex.

The Mean Green improves to 9-14 overall and 2-1 in the Sun Belt Conference. North Texas took two of three games this weekend against the Warhawks. ULM falls to 8-13 and 1-2 in conference play.

Fowler went 3-for-3 at the plate and posted the team’s first triple of the season with a three-base hit in the third inning. Her hit knocked in a run, tying the game at 2-2. The senior also had a double in the sixth inning.

Katya Muller gave North Texas an early lead with a lead-off home run in the first inning. ULM quickly gained the lead with two runs in the second inning.

Freshman Mariza Martinez hit a solo home run in the fifth inning that proved to be the game-winner. Courtney Bradshaw added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Freshman Jennifer Smith picked up her fourth win of the season, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs off five hits.

Fowler and Martinez led the Mean Green in the three-game series with six hits each. Three of Fowler’s hits were for extra bases.

North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, March 12 when it faces TWU at Lovelace Stadium in Denton. Wednesday’s game is a “Strikeout Breast Cancer” game. Admission for the March 12th game is free, but donations are welcome. The North Texas softball is selling T-shirts to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
