DENTON (4/11/08) - The North Texas softball team pushed back its games for this weekend. Due to poor weather in Alabama, the Mean Green will play Troy once on Saturday at 5 pm and will play a doubleheader on Sunday, starting at 1 pm.
North Texas is currently in fourth place in the Sun Belt Conference standings with an 8-7 record, while Troy is right in front of the Mean Green with a 9-6 mark. NT's 8-7 mark is tied for the best conference start in school history. With its sweep of Centenary on Wednesday, North Texas tied a program record for most wins in a season at 22.
As a team, North Texas is second in the conference with a .291 batting average. Individually in the conference, Mallory Cantler and Rebecca Waters are second and third in batting at .402 and .392. Cantler is also second in hits (58), fourth in RBI (36) and second in doubles (14). The freshman posted her 14th double of the season against Centenary, which tied the NT single-season record. She is already ranked in the top five for RBI and needs 11 more hits tie Katya Muller's single-season hit record.
Muller, who is also NT's all-time hit leader, has been scorching hot in conference play. In conference-games only, she leads the SBC in hits, runs scored, home runs and total bases. Sarah Jones has also stepped up her play. She leads the team in conference-only games with a .425 batting average and 13 RBI. The third baseman is tied for sixth nationally with four sacrifice flies.
