Troy Sweeps Mean Green Softball In Doubleheader

TROY, Ala. (4/13/08) The Troy softball team swept the doubleheader against North Texas on Sunday afternoon at Troy Softball Complex. The Trojans shutout the Mean Green in the first game, 4-0, and came back to win the second game, 10-2.

The Mean Green (22-26, 8-10 Sun Belt) falls to 3-8 in the all-time series against the Trojans. Troy extends its record to 27-18 overall and 12-6 in the conference. NT was swept in a three-game conference series for the first time this season.

Ashlyn Williams picked up her 22^nd win the circle for the Trojans in the first game, pitching a three-hitter. Three of the Trojans’ five hits were for extra bases, including a two-run homer by Rocky Paige.

Freshman Mallory Cantler gave North Texas an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game with her fifth home run of the season. Troy, however, came back with eight runs in the first three innings. Tanya McClean hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the five-run third inning to seal the win for the Trojans.

Troy added two runs in the sixth inning to end the game on the run rule. The Trojans outhit the Mean Green, 10-6 in the second game.

In both games, Troy jumped out ahead with early runs and then was able to hold the Mean Green scoreless down the stretch.

Rebecca Waters posted two hits in the first game to lead the Mean Green, while Mariza Martinez and Heather Bostic each recorded two hits in the nightcap.

North Texas returns to action on Wednesday, April 16 when it faces Texas Woman’s on the road at 7 pm.
