Waters Drives In Five Runs In Softball Win

DENTON, Texas (4/19/08) Sophomore Rebecca Waters drove in five runs to lead the North Texas softball team to a 13-7 win against Western Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green lost the first game of the doubleheader, 1-0.
The Mean Green improves to 24-27 overall and 9-11 in the Sun Belt, while Western Kentucky falls to 17-26 and 3-13 in the conference. NT and WKU are tied, 10-10, in the series between the two teams.
Waters gave North Texas an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of the second game with her eighth home run of the season. The sophomore knocked in two more runs with a double in the second inning. The Mean Green scored eight of its 13 runs in the first two innings. The five RBI ties a single-game school record.
The Mean Green bats exploded in the second game with 16 hits but struggled in the opener. North Texas outhit WKU, 5-4, in the opening loss but was hurt by an unearned run in the third inning.
Kristina Fowler took the loss despite allowing just four hits. Kayla Lawson picked up her ninth win of the season in the second game, allowing five hits in five-plus innings of work. She tied a career high with nine strikeouts. She struck out nine batters in her last outing.
Five North Texas players posted multi-hit games in the win. Sarah Jones was the only player to post two hits in both games.
Courtney Bradshaw came up just short in the opening loss. In the bottom of the seventh with one runner on, the freshman hit a deep fly ball to left center that bounced off the outfield fence for a double. Both runners were left stranded on base to seal the win for WKU.
North Texas returns to action on Sunday, April 20 for the deciding game in the three-game series between the Mean Green and Western Kentucky. The first pitch is set for 11 am at Lovelace Stadium.
