DENTON, Texas (4/30/08) Freshman Mallory Cantler drove home the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the North Texas softball team a 3-2 victory against Texas-Arlington on Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green (25-31) snaps a four-game losing streak and finishes the regular season on a positive note. NT will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championship on May 7-10 in Troy, Ala. North Texas tied the series against the Mavericks at 4-4 but held a 2-1 advantage this season.
With Katya Muller on second and two outs on the scoreboard, Cantler knocked her teammate home with the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh. Cantler went 3-for-4 in the game with one RBI, while Muller went 3-for-3 with one run scored. Two of Muller’s three hits were infield singles that the shorstop beat the throw to first.
UTA took an early 2-0 off a Whitney Simpson two-run homer to right center field in the second inning. North Texas began its comeback in the fourth inning with an RBI single by Heather Bostic. Kadie Platt crossed home plate after pinch-running for Courtney Bradshaw. Bradshaw started the inning off with a single. The catcher tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth inning with a solo home run to center field that bounced off the scoreboard.
Kristina Fowler picked up the win for the Mean Green, pitching five innings and striking out six Mavericks. She allowed two runs off four hits.
With her three hits in the game, Cantler is now in second place in the NT single-season record book with 68 hits. She needs just one hit to tie Muller’s record from 2006. With her game-winning RBI, Cantler moves into a tie for second place with 41 runs batted in. She would need 12 more RBI to tie Susan Waters’ record of 53.
