TROY, Ala. (5/12/08) North Texas first baseman Mallory Cantler was named to the 2008 Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team, released Sunday by the league office.
The Mean Green finished its 2008 campaign with a 27-33 record and a 2-2 mark in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. North Texas picked up wins against Florida Atlantic and Troy in the tournament. Louisiana at Monroe ended the Mean Green’s season with a 5-1 decision on Friday night.
Cantler was involved in both of the Mean Green’s wins in the tournament. She hit a dramatic walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Florida Atlantic, 4-3. In the 13-inning win against Troy, the freshman added an insurance run in the top of the 13th with a sacrifice fly. She knocked in the team’s only run in the 5-1 loss to ULM with an RBI double.
Cantler was named first-team All-Sun Belt prior to the conference tournament after having a stellar freshman campaign. She was only the second freshman softball player at North Texas to be named to the all-conference team and the first to be named to the first-team squad.
She led North Texas this season in batting average (.374), hits (71), doubles (16) and RBI (44). The batting average, hits and doubles are all single-season records at North Texas. The freshman’s 44 RBI ranks second in the records book.
