DENTON, Texas (5/13/08) - North Texas senior shortstop Katya Muller was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Muller, a journalism-public relations major, is the second student-athlete to be named to the academic all-district team in the five-year history of the North Texas softball program. Susan Waters was a first-team all-district honoree in 2006. Muller is a three-time member of the North Texas Dean’s List and a two-time member of the Sun Belt Commissioner’s List.
The Southlake, Texas native had a stellar senior campaign and was named first-team All-Sun Belt for the second straight year. She was the only Mean Green player to start all 60 games this season and in her career missed just one game. The senior finished second on the team with 61 hits, which ranks fifth on the single-season record list. She holds three of the five records in that category. During the 2008 season, she became the program’s all-time hit leader. She finished her career with 222 hits and 122 runs scored, another career record.
To be nominated for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on her team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. District VI represents student-athletes in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
Muller will now be added to the Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced on May 28.
