TROY, Ala. (5/6/08) Senior shortstop Katya Muller and freshman first baseman Mallory Cantler were named to the All-Sun Belt Conference First Team, released Tuesday by the league office. Muller is receiving recognition for the second straight year, while Cantler is the second North Texas softball player to receive All-Sun Belt honors as a freshman.
Muller has been swinging a hot bat recently, hitting.437 in the last 20 games. In those 20 games, she has led the team with 37 hits and nine doubles. She has compiled at least one hit in 19 of the 24 conference games. Seven of those games were multi-hit performances, including a 4-for-5 game against FIU.
The senior became the Mean Green’s all-time hit leader this season and was the first player at NT to eclipse the 200-hit mark. She is currently second on the team this season with 57 hits and fifth with a .300 hitting percentage.
Cantler is having a stellar freshman campaign. She leads North Texas in batting average (.384), hits (68), doubles (15) and RBI (41). She is fourth in the conference in hits, tied for fifth in RBI, tied for second in doubles and fourth in total bases. She is also fifth in the Sun Belt in batting. The first baseman has compiled at least one hit in 18 of the 24 conference games and has gone hitless only 15 times this season. She leads the Mean Green with 20 multi-hit games, including nine in conference games.
The freshman set a school record for single-season doubles, is currently second in single-season hits and tied for second in RBI at North Texas. She has committed just two errors this season.
North Texas has received two first-team All-Sun Belt awards for the second straight year. Last year, Susan Waters and Muller were named All-Sun Belt First Team. Katy Maxey was named to the All-Sun Belt Second Team as a freshman in 2004.
The Mean Green (25-31, 9-15 Sun Belt) received a No. 6 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Championship and will face No. 3 Troy on Wednesday, May 7 at 3 pm.
