Softball Opens Season With 4-3 Win Against Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (2/13/09) The North Texas softball team opened its season with a 4-3 win against Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the Mean Green’s season opener at the Corpus Christi Invitational.
The Mean Green improves to 4-2 in season openers. NT takes a 4-3 lead in the series against the Islanders.
"It was a good start," said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard. "We still have a few wrinkles to iron out, but overall I thought we played well except for that one inning. I thought our pitching was superb and that we hit the ball well."
North Texas held an early 4-0 lead but gave up three runs in the fifth inning. Pitcher Kayla Lawson held the Islanders hitless until the fith. The three hits that Lawson gave up in the game were all contained to that one inning.
Mariza Martinez led off the game with a double. She scored the first run from third off a fielder’s choice. Freshman Megan Rupp scored the second run in the first inning off a groundout. She reached base with a walk. Both Martinez and Rupp stole bases in the inning.
North Texas added two more runs in the fourth inning off two TAMUCC miscues. Freshman Lyndi Samuelson scored off a wild pitch after reaching base with a walk. Kadie Platt singled for her first hit of the season and then scored off a passed ball. Her score ended up being the winning run in the game.
A triple and a single by the Islanders cut the Mean Green’s lead to one, 4-3, but Lawson shut the host team down the rest of the way.
Junior Rebecca Waters posted a multi-hit game with two hits. NT outhit TAMUCC, 6-3.
North Texas continues play in the Corpus Christi Invitational with two games on Saturday at 9 am and 11 am against Detroit Mercy and Creighton.
