DENTON, Texas (2/23/09) The North Texas softball team won the Sleep Inn Classic Championship title with a record of 4-1, and Sarah Jones and Mariza Martinez were named to the all-tournamen team this past weekend.
North Texas and Iowa State both finished the Mean Green’s home tournament with a 4-1 record, but NT won the championship because of its head-to-head victory against Iowa State. North Texas opened the tournament with a 7-4 victory against the Cyclones.
Jones hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give NT a 7-6 victory against Wichita State to seal the tournament championship. The win was especially sweet because the Mean Green had been winless in 10 attempts against the Shockers.
Martinez posted NT’s first home run of the game against the Shockers, hitting a solo shot in the third inning to give North Texas a 2-0 lead. She was also involved with the Mean Green’s two runs in the fourth inning, posting a long single that helped score Anna Barren and Kadie Platt.
Jones and Martinez both tied career highs with three-hit games in the win against Central Arkansas.
Jones went 6-for-10 in the tournament with two doubles and a home run. Three of her six hits were for extra bases, and she knocked in three runs.
Martinez batted .474 in the tournament with two RBI. She tied for the tournament lead with nine hits and was first with five stolen bases.
The Mean Green is off to its best start in school history with an 8-4 record. NT continues its homestand with a doubleheader against Oklahoma State on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 4:30 pm. NT defeated Oklahoma State last year, 5-2.
