Cowgirls Take Two From Mean Green Softball

DENTON, Texas (2/25/09) Despite comeback efforts by the Mean Green in the late innings, the Oklahoma State softball team held on to win both games of a doubleheader against North Texas on Wednesday night at Lovelace Stadium. The Cowgirls won by scores of 8-6 and 4-2.
The Mean Green falls to 8-6 overall, while the Cowgirls improve to 10-4. OSU extends its lead in the series to 6-3.
“We were not making adjustments at the plate,” said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard. “We just couldn’t get going offensively in the games.”
The Mean Green came back from an 8-0 deficit in the first game and a 3-0 score in the second but could not knock home runners in the latter innings. NT outhit the Cowgirls, 7-6, in the nightcap and stranded six runners. In the combined two games, North Texas left 14 runners stranded on base.
OSU held the Mean Green scoreless in the first four innings of both games. In the first game, the Cowgirls held an 8-0 lead in the fifth inning after posting a three-run homer in the third and a two-RBI triple in the fifth. Mallory Cantler hit her second home run of the season to put a run on the board for the Mean Green in the bottom of the fifth.
North Texas added another run in the sixth inning and then scored four runs in the seventh inning. Lisa Johnson and Rebecca Waters posted RBI doubles, and Sarah Jones contributed an RBI single to the rally. The bases were left loaded in the sixth and two runners were stranded in the seventh.
Anna Barren plated two runs in the fifth inning of the second game with a double, cutting the OSU to one, 3-2. Lyndi Samuelson and Courtney Bradshaw both singled in the inning. Samuelson started the seventh inning off with a single but was left stranded on second.
Kayla Lawson (2-3) took the loss in the first game, pitching seven innings and allowing four earned runs off 12 hits. Jennifer Smith (4-2) gave up three early runs in the second game and picked up the loss. She gave up four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
North Texas continues its homestand this weekend, hosting the Quality Inn & Suites Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 28-March 1.
