Softball Wins Two At Quality Inn & Suites Invitational

DENTON, Texas (2/28/09) The North Texas softball team won games against Kansas and Harvard in day one action at the Quality Inn & Suites Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Lovelace Stadium. The Mean Green defeated Kansas, 5-2, and came back to defeat Harvard, 10-6.
The Mean Green improves to 10-6 overall and leads the three-team tournament with a 2-0 record. Harvard went 1-1 to start off its season, while Kansas fell to 6-11 with its two losses on Saturday.
“We definitely hit well,” said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard. “Once we posted that first hit, we went on fire. They were very contagious hitters.”
The Mean Green posted 10 hits in each of its two games and put runners on base in every inning. After struggling in the fifth inning so far this season, North Texas scored a bulk of its runs on Saturday in the fifth inning. Against Kansas, North Texas took an early 2-0 lead in the fifth and added on runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Against Harvard, North Texas scored eight runs in the fifth to take the lead and the eventual win.
Ashley Lail (3-1) took the opening win against Kansas, pitching her third complete game of the season. She allowed two runs off six hits. The two runs were contained to the sixth inning. Sarah Jones supplied the offensive power in the first game, going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. She gave North Texas the 2-0 lead in the fifth with a two-RBI double. The North Texas defense also played a part. Kansas threatened to score the first one in the fourth, but Megan Rupp threw out a runner at home.
Mariza Martinez and Mallory Cantler contributed RBI singles in the sixth inning, giving NT a 4-0 lead. After Kansas plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth, Rebecca Waters opened the seventh with her first home run of the season.
Jennifer Smith picked up her fifth win of the season against Harvard, relieving Kayla Lawson in the third inning. Smtih pitched 4.2 innings, allowing two earned runs off four hits.
Down 6-2 in the fourth inning, North Texas scored eight runs off seven hits to take a 10-6 lead. Rupp started the fifth off with a single and after batting around, posted her second single in the same inning. Martinez knocked in the first run of the inning with a double, and Waters followed with her own run batted in. With the bases loaded and two outs on the scoreboard, Kadie Platt gave North Texas the lead with a bloop single to right field that scored all three runs. Lisa Johnson plated a run with a single, and North Texas scored the final two runs off Crimson errors.
Rupp, Cantler and Bradshaw all posted multi-hit performances against Harvard. Cantler leads the way with three hits and three RBI in the tournament.
North Texas continues action in the Quality Inn & Suites Invitational with two games on Sunday, March 1. All three games in the tournament were moved back an hour due to weather. The first game between Harvard and Kansas starts at 10 am, while North Texas opens action at 12:30 pm against Harvard.
