DENTON, Texas (3/1/09) The North Texas softball team won the Quality Inn & Suites Invitational after finishing the weekend with a 2-1 record. Despite losing to Harvard, 3-2, on Sunday, the Mean Green won the tournament behind a 2-1 record.
The Mean Green is now 10-7 overall after going 1-0 against Kansas and 1-1 versus Harvard in the tournament. The Crimson finished the weekend with a 2-2 mark, splitting its games with both Kansas and North Texas. The Jayhawks went 1-2 and are 7-11 overall.
“I thought we played well this weekend,” said North Texas head coach TJ Hubbard. “Today, we faced a good pitcher and left some runners stranded on base. Defensively, we need to make plays and protect our pitchers better. We have some work to do before facing ULM in conference play, but we are headed in the right direction.”
Jessica Pledger knocked in the game-winning run for Harvard in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. North Texas came back from a 2-0 deficit, tying the game in the sixth with a two-run homer by Mallory Cantler. All three Harvard runs were scored off Mean Green errors.
Ashley Lail (3-2) took the loss despite allowing just six hits in 6.2 innings of work. All three runs were unearned. Rachel Brown picked up her second win of the season for Harvard, striking out 10 Mean Green batters. Both her and Lail were named to the Quality Inn & Suites All-Tournament Team. Lail went 1-1 in the tournamen with a 1.02 ERA.
Cantler was named the tournament’s MVP. She went 4-for-8 in the tournament with five RBI. The five RBI was tied for the tournament lead. She posted an RBI single against Kansas and started NT’s comeback in the win against Harvard with a two-RBI double. She was also intentionally walked twice in the tournament.
Sarah Jones was also named to the all-tournament team, her second all-tournament team recognition this season. The senior was instrumental in NT’s win against Kansas, going 3-for-4 with two RBI. She knocked in NT’s first two runs with a two-RBI double.
North Texas won both of its back-to-back tournaments this season: the Sleep Inn Classic last weekend and this week’s Quality Inn & Suites. The Mean Green is off to its best record in school history with a 10-7 mark. NT continues its homestand on Wednesday, March 4 against Stephen F. Austin at 2 pm.
